All About Butterflies!
Today we started talking about butterflies. We began by listing what we already knew. Children knew facts such as:
* Caterpillars eat lots of leaves.
*Caterpillars climb trees to make their cocoons.
*Caterpillars go into cocoons and come out as butterflies.
We are very excited for the arrival of our caterpillars on Thursday!

We love Mercy Watson!
Over the last 6 weeks we have read the 6 Mercy Watson books by Kate DiCamillo. These are wonderful early chapter books that we read aloud each day. The illustrations are wonderful and the characters return in story after story. The children have loved all 6 of the books. To conclude our Mercy Watson stories, we had a Mercy Watson celebration, complete with hot buttered toast (Mercy’s favorite food), Mercy Watson masks, and creating ideas for some new Mercy Watson adventures.

How big is a whale?
In my last post, I mentioned that we measured the lengths of whales. This tied in with a book we read all about Antarctica. The children were especially interested in the animals in Antarctica, including whales and penguins. In order to grasp the size of some of these creatures, we measured the lengths of various sea animals with our bodies. Here are some of the pictures of us measuring the length of a dolphin, orca whale, humpback whale, and blue whale.

Back to Blogging
I am sorry that I have not kept up with the blog posts lately. There has been so much going on in Kindergarten. Here are some of the fun things we have done lately:
*Pajama day was a success! We had our book swap, tie-dyed our pillow cases and enjoyed a special snack together.
*We measured the lengths of ocean mammals using our bodies. Did you know it takes 13 kindergartners to equal the length of a Humpback whale (50 ft)!
* We have been reading the Mercy Watson books by Kate DiCamillo. We are currently reading book 5 of 6. These books are wonderful beginner chapter books about a pig named Mercy and her human family.
I hope to keep you updated on a more regular basis from now on.
