The Lawrence School Bulldogs football team played their first game of the season on Wednesday, September 29, against Nantucket’s Cyrus Pierce Middle School. It was a beautiful day for football, and it felt great to be out on the field. Thanks to Lawrence’s fast offense and strong defense, we held our own on Wednesday. After only one full day of hitting in practice, Lawrence’s first, second, and third string stepped up and did their jobs.
The Bulldogs’ defense made some great tackles and players were quick to act when Nantucket fumbled the ball. Our offense ran fast and made some nice blocks. One particularly nice play was made by number 14, Craig Green. Green ran the ball avoiding several tackles in the backfield, then broke ahead of the Nantucket defense for an 80 yard touchdown. The worst moment of the game was when number 20, Andrew Thompson, was tackled and walked off the field with an injury. Thompson’s broken wrist will keep him out for the rest of the season.
Due to a technicality, this first game will be considered a scrimmage. This means the score does not matter, as a win or loss will not count toward our already shortened season. Due to budget cuts, the Bulldogs will only have three more games this fall. Our next game is Wednesday, October 6th at 4 pm vs. Mashpee. The game will be here at the Lawrence School.
